ASG: Fall Recruitment

Posted on Saturday, September 27, 2014

Do you have ideas for how certain parts of campus could be improved? Are you looking to develop communication, technical, and organizational skills while serving your community? Is helping student groups grow, accomplish their goals, and become a lasting part of campus meaningful to you?

Whether it’s one of these (or all of them), you’ll also find friends who are interested in the same issues as you are, mentorship from upperclassmen who can help you carve out the role you are looking for, and projects that engage the larger student body in Associated Student Government (ASG).

Apply to be a committee member or residential senator for the upcoming year!

We will be hosting two information sessions during the week of September 29th:

  1. Wednesday, October 1st in University Hall 101 from 5-6pm
  2. Thursday, October 2nd in Technological Institute M164 from 5-6pm

All information applicants need to know can be found on this article and the one linked below, but feel free to attend the information sessions anyway.

Here are the important details regarding both options on this page.

Justice for James Foley

Posted on Tuesday, August 19, 2014

August 19, 2014

Earlier today, we began hearing news reports of the death of James Foley, an American freelance journalist and Medill graduate.

The U.S. government is working to authenticate the claims by the Islamic State (also known as ISIS, or ISIL). If true, the Northwestern community has lost a truly brave, kind soul.

This is the latest horrific act by a monstrous organization bent on the destruction of innocent lives, and we urge the U.S. government and its allies to do all they can to stop ISIL and bring James Foley’s captors to justice.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the Foley family and their friends. We know this has been an incredibly tough, painful several months, and we want them to know that James’ courage in choosing to report the news from a perilous warzone will not be forgotten. He sought to bring the truth to the world, and for that, he has our deepest gratitude and admiration.

ASG Statement on Student Loans

Posted on Tuesday, June 10, 2014

Yesterday President Barack Obama announced his administration would now permit almost 5 million more federal student loan borrowers the ability to cap their loan payments at 10% of their income. With college tuition rates rising annually and hundreds of Northwestern students taking out federal loans each year, Northwestern’s Associated Student Government (ASG) applauds the administration’s efforts to make student loan debt more affordable and manageable to repay.

Nationally, 71% of undergraduates leave college with debt (of $29,400 on average), leading to more than $1.2 trillion dollars in cumulative student loan debt in America (more than even credit card debt). Therefore ASG also supports Senator Elizabeth Warren’s bill that would let borrowers refinance their student loans at lower interest rates, saving them potentially thousands of dollars. We urge Senators Dick Durbin and Mark Kirk, in addition to all other members of Congress, to support Warren’s legislation when it comes up for a vote next week.

The Obama administration also proposed a number of other executive actions yesterday designed to help vulnerable student borrowers. To learn more about the President's college affordability and loan reform policies, check out Obama’s first-ever Tumblr Q&A at 3:00pm CT on June 10, 2014: ObamaIRL.tumblr.com.

ASG & PHA Joint Statement on Campus Safety & Inclusivity

Posted on Saturday, May 24, 2014

Like many of you, we were outraged to see “Morty’s Angels,” a website objectifying Northwestern’s female undergraduate population, created within our community. This website was a disrespectful invasion of privacy that reflects the larger issue of environments unsafe for women on college campuses.

At this point, the website is no longer live. The communal action taken by both Northwestern students and administrators to shut down this website was laudable. We are encouraged to see students speaking up and supporting one another in situations like these. This incident, however, must be seen within the greater context of Title IX issues across the nation. The responses to this website are valid reflections of the belief that the Northwestern community should be a safe and inclusive space for everyone.

Here at Northwestern, we must hold each other accountable as we work together towards maintaining a safe and inclusive campus. The Office of Campus Inclusion and Community states: “we expect…all students…to engage in socially responsible behavior and to model exceptional conduct, character, and citizenship in campus and beyond.”

If you or a friend were on this website and wish to talk about this further, please reach out to Dr. Renée Redd from the Women’s Center or if you wish to pursue legal action, please contact Joan Slavin, Northwestern’s Title IX Coordinator.

Signed,

Associated Student Government Executive Board & Northwestern University Panhellenic Association
