The Candidates

Congratulations to new Co-Presidents Caleb Snead and Ty’Shea Woods! Learn more about their goals for the upcoming year here.

The Co-Presidents:

Co-President Caleb Snead and Co-President Ty’shea Woods

  • Trust. From the endorsements we received from the Current Co-presidents, Molly and Donovan, to many Student Organizations, one thing remains consistent among these interactions: Trust. Trust that we will carry the torch forward to light a path toward a better Northwestern. Trust that we are the best candidates to advocate for the needs of students and student organizations in times of need in spaces where decisions are made. Trust that we have earned through success with a variety of initiatives that students and student leaders deem relevant to their experience at Northwestern.

  • The foundation of our platform is Inclusion, which manifests in three different ways: (1) Cross-cultural community development, (2) Building relationships among ASG, Administrators, and Student Organizations, and (3) Financial literacy and transparency. By focusing on these three pillars, we intend to create a climate at Northwestern where culture is celebrated, communication is consistent and transparent, and all students know how and why ASG makes its decisions.

  • The most important criteria we will look for when selecting our executive board are passion and initiative. We were first years when we joined the executive board as the Executive officer of Justice and Inclusion and Chair of Finance. Our passion for serving our community and the initiative we took to do so, not our experience, allowed us to put on Northwestern’s first-ever Cultural Summit and negotiate an additional $611k in funding for student organizations. Under proper leadership, drive is what is most important.

  • We have held positions in every branch of ASG and also hold positions of leadership in the International Studies Society and Quest+. The perspective we have gained from these leadership positions allows us to understand the mechanics of how things are accomplished in ASG, where there needs to be improvement in ASG, and how ASG can better serve the direct needs of students and student groups.

  • We are most passionate about inclusion. A sense of belonging on campus is critical to having a fulfilling college experience. Our mission is to empower students, especially those who hold BIPOC and FGLI identities, to play an active role in building an inclusive environment at Northwestern.

  • Under our leadership, ideas become conversations, conversations evolve into initiatives, and initiatives bring innovation. VOTE because you dare to be a part of this change. VOTE because you dare to imagine a better Northwestern.

The President and Vice President:

President Nicole Aguilar-Medina and Vice President Anna Alava

  • Nicole:

When I was a freshman, the previous ASG President, delivered a speech to the new incoming class. I saw the value that a speaker had in front of a large crowd, which encouraged me to join an institution that was bigger than myself. As a first-generation, low-income, Honduran/Latina student, I yearned to listen and see someone in a position of leadership that shared some of my experiences. I deeply desired a form of representation that translated into actions. Therefore, I am running as president with the intention of representing community voices through actions. I am running to uphold existing communities and newly-emerging communities on campus that are looking at us for support. I am running to engage the student groups in a way that has historically not been done!

    Anna:

I initially joined ASG with the desire to work for greater support for communities that I saw lacked resources on campus– students and staff of color, survivors, and students on financial aid or who use SES. After being involved in the executive level of both ASG and other student organizations, I’ve noticed this disconnect even more. With the experience of navigating SOFO, running events, and the issues that student leaders face and insight into how ASG operates, we are running to make ASG’s platform and power truly representative of the student body. We are running to include as many voices into ASG funding and ASG administrative meetings as possible.

  • Through ASG, we have three core pillars: (1) Equity and Inclusion, (2) Community and Campus Life Support, and (3) Connecting ASG to Students. Equity and inclusion seeks to expand FGLI support on campus, increase survivor support and visibility, increase support for culturally competent therapists in CAPS, increase menstrual products campus wide, and re-institute ASG funding for the InclusionNU Fund through Multicultural Student Affairs. Community and Campus Life Support aims to advance transparent and communicative funding processes, expand community spaces for cultural and religious groups on campus, and advocate for staff and student workers’ rights. Finally, we will connect ASG to students by restructuring the Senate, furthering ASG Exec and Student Org relationships, and integrating student groups into the funding process. • For our executive board, we hope to work with people who are in tune with the student body and champion student voice. We know impactful work is being done by student organizers, and we want to use ASG’s resources and platform to further support and uplift the work being done.

  • Nicole:

Student Group Caucus Leader, Chair of Board of Financial Review, Alianza Senator, and Campus Life Committee Member. I have also been involved in the Student Organization for Labor Rights, specifically focusing on the Worker Outreach committee, Wildlife General Body, Volleyball Club General Body, and the Latina and Latino Studies Clerical Aide work study that sought to advance the development of the program through the inclusion of an undergraduate student. Ultimately, all of my roles on campus have allowed me to consider the student life that exists outside of ASG and the life that exists within the structural pillars of the organization, therefore, we have the experience to advocate for groups with similar sentiments and provide a process with more transparent communication.

    Anna:

Deputy Chair of Justice and Inclusion, APAC Senator, SESP Senator, Justice and Inclusion Committee Member, and Board of Financial Review Member. Outside of ASG, I have held leadership positions in Kaibigan, the Asian Pacific American Coalition, and Asian American Intervarsity, gaining experience in event planning and navigating Northwestern as a student org. As a Treasurer, I understand the student group perspective on funding and have seen the ways the Finance Committee operated in the past years that make the funding process inaccessible. With both the ASG and student org perspectives, Nicole and I have leadership experience that will allow us to create an ASG that truly works for students.

Together, we wrote a resolution to bring greater resources and recognition to the Asian American Studies and Latina/o Studies Programs. From being in conversation with students, faculty, and administration, this resolution passed unanimously. We have built relationships from working with staff and student workers in many other departments to identify ways that students and ASG can best advocate for greater resources.

  • We are most passionate about equity through various lenses. Coming from immigrant families, mixed-status households, POC, and FGLI backgrounds, we seek to represent the voice of all students on campus, specifically centering transparent communication between ASG, as an institution, to organizations on campus that are committed to developing a positive student life experience. We seek to connect under-resourced communities with the sufficient means to produce events, and we will encourage collaborative coalition building to groups invested in liberation ideologies. With experience in running events on campus, navigating SOFO and Norris, we are well equipped to accomplish this.

  • From a student group perspective, we have seen the first-hand impact of ASG and the inside of ASG operations. As ASG’s Deputy Chair of Justice and Inclusion and Chair of the Board of Financial Review, we have seen how the top positions with the platform to speak out for marginalized students and ensure equity and accountability in the funding process have not been used to their full potential. We recognize the power that ASG holds, and we are determined to expand it to as many students as possible.
